The SaveFooty Vision for drought affected football clubs
1 Comment Published 1 year, 8 months ago in Sport & Leisure.- A water tank for every ground under threat of closure due to drought.
- A fundraising system so clubs can buy grey or untreated water.
Sounds simple, because it actually is! Knowing what’s going on behind the scenes, I’m starting to get butterflies in my chest. You see I KNOW, this vision will one day be a reality. It’s an amazing feeling…
It’s now 1 month since I came up with the SaveFooty idea.
In that time, in diminishing sentence length, I have:
- created lots of pikkies my mum thinks funny
- written lotsa things that I think are funny
- got dozens of footy clubs behind SF
- destroyed the looks of my car
- laughed at the videos on SF
- had lots of meetings
- met many people &
- not slept much!
The fun-raising starts next month so stay tuned. There are so many things happening I might have to retrospectively add some posts in bulk to catch up. Or perhaps that will be in the tell-all book.
I’ve assembled a list of drought football headlines at
http://www.savefooty.com/index.php/drought-footy-headlines/
It’s sad how many people will not be able to enjoy footy this year.
Today Glen from the local paper took a few snaps of me kickin a Sherrin. The ground was closed because of the drought, yet we snuck on anyway. (Thanks for turning a blind eye John!) So perhaps the SaveFooty project might get into a newspaper. If it does, you’ll see what happens when a drop kick (me) attempts a drop punt on dust! Stay tuned…
One of past jobs was Group Marketing Manager at Telstra Mobile. While it gave me a chance to play around with hi-tek ideas, the real 3G is way more precious.
In my case 3G is 3 generations playing footy! Today my dad came over and we kicked a footy around in the back yard with my sons…
…on some grass. How priceless is that?!?
Thanks to Bryce, Mark, Michelle and Don at world famouse K-Rock 95.5 FM for organising some SaveFooty.com ads.
The first SaveFooty radio spots go to air this evening. Having gone from idea to launch in less than 18 days; you know what? I need some sleep!
It will be interesting to see if anyone comes here. Kind of like the Kevin Costner movie Field of Dreams. In this movie an idealist Costner built a baseball ground in the middle of nowhere because he had a belief, a mantra, ‘Build it and they will come’.
So I’ve come up with an idea from nowhere, and built a site in the middle of cyberspace based on a wet dream amidst drought - water!
So will they come? Obviously YOU did, yet unless you’re name is Packer or Murdoch, YOU times millions will be required to pull off something miraculous, and convert my crazy idea and dustbowls into playable footy grounds.
So it’s Saturday tomorrow and yes, I’m off to the footy with my sons. Then no doubt I’ll be on the phone and tapping away once again…
..coz I gotta help SaveFooty!
My personal pride and joy (Megane convertible) has just had SaveFooty.com plastered all over it.
So a huge thanks to Tim and Greg at Signific for donating the signwriting free of charge. You guys are our first entrant into the SaveFooty Hall of Fame! A photo will be posted soon!

A great story in the Herald-Sun today by columnist Jon Anderson. Perhaps city folk will start experiencing what regional people have endured for years! Also read my post Melbourne Footy Cactus! But first, here’s Jon’s article…
VICTORIAN country football clubs will go into the 2007 season in better shape than many of their city counterparts. Despite the prolonged drought, most of the 80,000 Australian Rules participants in country Victoria will be able to play, whereas thousands of Melbourne footballers face delayed starts to the season, and indefinite futures, if rain doesn’t arrive in the next month.Jon Anderson’s full article from the Herald-Sun can be read here
